St. Petersburg, Fla. – Jan. 18, 2018 – After hotly contested matches at Orlando City Stadium, UCF’s Spectrum Stadium and Broward County Stadium, the Florida Cup heads to Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg where tournament debutants Colombia’s Atletico Nacional and Poland’s Legia Warsaw – two countries that will face each other in group play during the FIFA World Cup in June – will face each other Saturday night, Jan. 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET. Tickets are still available at www.floridacup.com.
As part of the match, Colombian National Team legendary goalkeeper René Higuita will be honored at halftime for his contributions to the game. “The Florida Cup would like to recognize international icon of the game and Colombia legend, René Higuita, for all the accomplishments in a successful career and, most importantly, being a global ambassador of the game to all of us fans,” said Florida Cup CEO Ricardo Villar.
The Florida Cup is up for grabs on Saturday night for El Verde. Barcelona SC of Guayaquil jumped to the lead of the Florida Cup table on Monday defeating Brazilian side Fluminense, earning six points in two games. The team beat Legia (POL) 3-2 in their first match, and has the same three goal differential as Rangers FC (also with six points) but leads the Scottish team in the tiebreaker - scoring six goals to Rangers’ five. Nacional controls its own destiny to win the 2018 Florida Cup, and Barcelona can only wait and watch. The Colombian side beat Atletico Mineiro 2-0 in their first match, and can take the Florida Cup if they accumulate a goal differential greater than three goals, or tie on goal differential and exceed the six goals scored by Ecuadorians.
