Players to Watch at the Florida Cup - Atletico Nacional

The four clubs participating in the Florida Cup represent the best in South America and MLS, and the following players have won numerous titles and individual achievements over the past decade. Here’s who will make the biggest impact at this year’s Florida Cup...

Atlético Nacional

Vladamir Hernández

Birthplace: Arauca, Colombia

Vladamir Hernández returns as one of the club’s most productive players from last season. The striker scored 10 goals in Liga Águila and had 4 assists in all competitions after appearing in 45 games. Attacking with speed from both wide positions, Hernández creates havoc around the goal with his deft touches and quick changes in direction. He won the Copa Colombia with Nacional in 2018 after joining from Santos. Prior to Nacional, he spent ten seasons with Atlético Junior where he won two Liga titles and the Copa Colombia in 2015. At Junior, he appeared in 300 games and scored 57 goals. Hernández made his international debut in a 1-0 loss to Brazil in 2017.

Daniel Bocanegra

Birthplace: Purificación, Colombia

Daniel Bocanegra will be the Nacional’s most decorated player at the Florida Cup. The central defender has appeared in 262 games for Nacional and won four national titles, three Copa Colombia, the Superliga, the Recopa Sudamericana, and the 2016 Copa Libertadores. In 2019, Bocanegra played in 43 games, anchoring the Nacional defense to first place in the Liga Águila II first stage. His only goal was the game winner in Nacional’s 1-0 victory over Deportivo Cali in May. In 2018, Bocanegra’s stoppage-time free-kick sealed a 4-3 aggregate victory over Once Caldas in the Copa Colombia final.

Daniel Muñoz

Birthplace: Amalfi, Colombia

Daniel Muñoz arrived in July from Rionegro Águilas and helped Nacional secure first place in the Liga Águila II standings. Muñoz had 7 goals and 6 assists from his outside defensive position, and his ability to push forward posed an unpredictable threat for Nacional’s opponents. His strike against Cúcuta Deportivo on September 4th was the fastest goal in club history at 22 seconds and was also the 5,000th goal scored for the club. In August, Muñoz was called up to represent Colombia in two friendlies against Brazil and Venezuela.
